"Everyone's future is directly affected by the actions of government."

    Like most Americans, members of the NIBCA would prefer not to have to deal with government rules and regulations; however, we do support them as long as they are reasonable and are established for an appropriate purpose. The NIBCA's Joint Government Issues committee has long been a valuable and active resource keeping track of regulatory and legislative issues impacting members of the Association and our communities. When NIBCA members have concerns with laws and regulations at any level - local, state or federal - the NIBCA is their resource for support.

    Numerous issues influencing the building trades have been positively affected through this committee's strong communication efforts at the local, the state and national levels. Locally, the committee continues to work with our elected officials and their office personnel at all levels to bring about common sense and reasonable regulations. These positive working relationships continue to be critical to our success as the NIBCA Joint Government Issues Committee works to protect and promote our members and our building industry.

    In 2001, the NIBCA's Government Issues Committee underwent positive change. Three area associations, the Coeur d'Alene Area Chamber of Commerce, the Coeur d'Alene Association of Realtors and the NIBCA, with valued support of the government issues committee members, organized the "Joint Government Issues Committee".  The committee's lunch meeting is attended by representatives from; the City of Coeur d'Alene- the City Council and the Building Department, Kootenai County Building & Planning Department, Panhandle Health Department, City of Hayden Building Department, City of Post Falls Building Department, Fire Departments and their guests.

    Representing the NIBCA on the Joint Government Issues committee are Builder-member Bill Johnson, Johnson Custom Homes, Inc. and Associate-member Bill Clark of Pioneer Title Company.

    The key position as NIBCA Legislative Spokesperson rests with the current President of the NIBCA, John Saffeels, Mountain Lodge Homes.

NIBCA Government Issues

The NIBCA Government Issues Committee is comprised of concerned association members who together shoulder the role of “watch dog” for the NIBCA.  These members come to the table once a month with issues that could or will affect the welfare of our North Idaho Building Industry.

This is not a job for the faint of heart as being a part of this committee means true involvement with the attending of area municipality meetings, public hearings and round tables all in the quest to gain pertinent information for action by the committee and/or to bring to the attention of the NIBCA Board of Directors for action by the NIBCA as an organization.

2008 could be a year that requires quick action by this committee.  Expected as highest priorities, though certainly not as an all-inclusive list, will be;

ü     Kootenai County Comprehensive Plan

ü     Code Adoptions

ü     Education & Dissemination of Information

ü     Contractor Licensing

ü     Impact Fees

I invite any member of our organization or the NIBCA Women's Council to attend one of our upcoming meetings.  The NIBCA Government Issues Team meets on a monthly basis, 1st Tuesday of the month, 4:00 PM in the NIBCA's upstairs Conference Room.  We are shouldered with being the 'watch dog' for the Board leadership and the team members take this responsibility seriously, because we care about our industry and the source of our livelihoods. Attend one of the upcoming meetings...you may find this is the team you belong on!
